My folks noticed that they had a mouse and decided to put out some traps for it. They had some of the "killing" variety and at least one "humane" trap. Valentine got lucky on February 14th when he wound up stuck in a live trap.
Nobody in the family was willing to kill the little pest so they gave him a home for the winter. When the weather is nicer Val will go free again.
This is being shared because itc is cute, and most people probably don't ever get a very good look at a wild mouse. Their features are different from region to region, Valentine is from the Buffalo, NY area.
My dad took this one.

back in boulder, we used the humane traps all the time--there was a big field near us where we could let them out & not worry about them coming back in.
once we caught one when it walked into a plastic bag full of empty cans & bottles to be recycled. very stealthy. we tied it up & took him outside; he hid in a squished can of tomato sauce & wouldn't come out for a couple minutes while i held it upside down.

that is, we used to use them all the time because we had mice all the time. here we just don't have a problem with mice.

Did the Colorado mice look like this? I think Valentine is a Peromyscus maniculatus or Prairie deer mouse but I have no way to be sure.

i don't think they did, but i'm not sure. they didn't hold still so much. becci says they were greyer than val, and i don't think they had white bellies.
